UWS Student Service Day

The Situation: Kim’s home and yard were badly damaged in a hail storm this spring. Her insurance has covered repair work to the roof and siding but does not cover damage to the grounds. She is working with the contractor to reduce her out of pocket expenses by helping with prep work but due to her disabilities was overwhelmed with all the tasks to complete. She lives alone on very limited income and has been unable to keep up the exterior maintenance.

The Solution: UWS Student Service Day and Habitat for Humanity!

Five hours and eighteen students later Kim is back on track and able to keep her home and grounds in good shape with time left over to complete her art and furniture projects which she donates to Center Against Sexual & Domestic Abuse (CASDA) in Superior.

Thanks to the generous support of UWS, and The Cathedral of Christ the King and a great donation from Lake Superior Garden Center! Thanks also go to Liz Amys and the staff at North Country Independent Living for helping facilitate this project. We look forward to helping many more folks access and maintain their homes!

New Paint Brightens Hearts and Home

What do you get when you combine KDAL Radio, Northstar Business Group, and Behr Paint? A safe decent and stable home for Mindy and her children.

Mindy recently graduated from the Lake Superior College LPN program but has been on work restrictions due to surgery. She and her two children live in a mobile home park in Proctor but due to her schedule as a working mom attending school, deferred maintenance put them at risk of losing their lease there. As her son Braiden told me "we have to make it look new or we have to move." The home needed a fresh coat of paint and repair of the metal skirting around the base. Volunteers from Northstar Business Group came out on Saturday morning and by noon Mindy's house had a fresh coat of paint and was looking fit and trim! Even the neighbors were impressed, many stopping to admire the work and offer encouragment.

The repairs were made using funds raised during a contest between KDAL AM 610 morning hosts Dave and Dave. The "loser" was out at Lake Superior Zoo on Friday morning cleaning up after the tigers. Dave Walters actually enjoyed visiting with the animals and spending the morning outside the studio. Mostly he enjoyed supporting Habitat for Humanity, remarking that "this is exactly what we should be doing."

The paint was donated to Habitat through The Home Depot and Behr, a partnership that continues to grow as does The Home Depot's commitment to preserving affordable housing in our community.

The day was capped off by some delicious cheeseburgers donated by Chaser's Bar & Grill in Proctor. Volunteers went home with full bellies, a warm heart, and a sense of accomplishment. Too bad they couldn't stick around to see the look on Braiden's face when he arrived from Grandma's house to see his "shiny new home!". A home made safe and secure through the combined efforts of our caring community.
