Christmas Greetings

As the year winds down and we approach the start of 2015, the extended family of Western Lake Superior Habitat for Humanity takes time to reflect on our busy year serving the Twin Ports and North Shore area. Please allow me to share some thoughts from our 2014 build season with you, our faithful supporters.

Habitat's Newest Partner Family Moves In

After many years of renting and dealing with less-than-ideal living conditions, Melissa Burrows and her family moved into their new home at 708 Weeks Avenue in Superior, Wisconsin on November 1. Melissa contributed over 240 hours of “sweat equity” to renovate the house, investing in a place she and her 3 children can call home for years to come. In the midst of unpacking her belongings and settling in at her house, Melissa remarked, “The house is absolutely amazing, we love it!”. A well-attended Home Dedication, accompanied by a Partner Family Picnic took place on October 1.

The ReStore hosting its first of hopefully many Art-Tastic Re-Purpose Socials on Friday evening!  Throughout the past month local artists and creative folks stopped by the Twin Ports ReStore and found items to re-purpose & create-a-new, folks grabbed everything from cabinet doors to bolts to cement trowels.  They took the items home, created-a-new and brought them back to the ReStore to be auctioned off at the Re-Purpose Art-Tastic Social.

Habitat Ice Home Hosting an Overnight Guest

Saturday evening Hermantown resident Rudy Hummel will be trading in his backyard quinsy hut for the Habitat Ice Home. Rudy has slept outside every night since June 6, 2013 and plans to continue to do so for an entire year. Hummel is raising funds for Habitat for Humanity through his GiveMN page - Snore-Outdoors-For-A-Better-World .  He states “At first, this was just a personal goal, but it has grown into much more. I chose to sleep outside; but there are many who don't have that choice.”

Habitat ReStore Holiday Light Recycle

The Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Superior is collecting holiday lights until January 9th for its annual Holiday Lights Recycling Program. While decorating this holiday season or when the time comes to put the decorations away, do not toss those old, defective, and unwanted holiday lights into the trash. By recycling your holiday lights, you are keeping the materials from entering landfills and helping a local non-profit continue its work in our community.

2014 Interfaith Build

Western Lake Superior Habitat for Humanity's A Brush with Kindness Program matches a sponsoring group and a community member's home repair needs. On October 14th, in conjunction with the Jewish holiday of Sukkot, members of Temple Israel and Glen Avon Presbyterian Church joined to repair and beautify a mobile home in Superior, WI. The mobile home belongs to Albert and Linda Reher who were told to replace the home's skirting and repair some other items to be within the standards of the park and within the requirements of their insurance company.

"Green Communities" Remodel Update

Work on our “Green Communities” remodel has progressed steadily this fall, but we’re missing the main ingredient—a qualified homebuyer.  The home is dried in and secure for winter and we'll take the month of December to let the electricians, plumbers and foundation crew do their work.  During that time we'll be hosting homebuyer orientations to find a family to fill that home up.  Stay tuned for updates to the construction schedule.

Giving a local Veteran a "Brush with Kindness"

We celebrated Veteran's Day by teaming up with the Home Depot Foundation and D.A.V. Duluth to bring mobility and freedom to Vietnam Veteran Gary Berg of West Duluth!

Wells Fargo Housing Foundation supports local Habitat for Humanity with funding and volunteers

Trading ‘Money for Muscle’, Wells Fargo’s Team Member Volunteer Program provides financial support to established local and national nonprofit housing organizations that have demonstrated the ability to create homeownership opportunities for low- to moderate-income families. Wells Fargo team members help build, renovate, paint or repair a home for low-to moderate-income (LMI) people.

A Ramp for Al

Big Al is all smiles after his maiden voyage on their improved access ramp. The original ramp was only 8 ft. long and was very treacherous to navigate. This ramp is a full thirty feet and solid as a rock.

Bulldog Build

Lead by Ryan of Rymel Construction the 148th "Bulldogs" spent a Saturday priming all the siding and pre-building all the deck platforms and shed walls for our "Green Remodel". Click here to see more photos on Facebook.
