It's Give to the Max Day!

It's Give to the Max Day and Western Lake Superior Habitat for Humanity will be competing with nonprofits all over Minnesota to raise money for their causes. Let's show 'em the Twin Ports cares about safe decent shelter! If you've enjoyed volunteering this past year tell your friends and family you'd like a chance to do it again by making a small gift to support our home preservation projects, just $10 gets you on the board!

Newman Catholic Campus Ministries Puts Faith Into Action

Students from the Newman Center split into two groups, one braving the cold to complete work on the Talerico Family landscaping project and the others helping to transport a donated handicap ramp that will be installed at home in Superior so that Geraldine can come home from St. Mary's safe and sound. The ramp project is sponsored by Cathedral of Christ the King in Superior and will make it possible for a neighbor to come home for the holidays!

World Habitat Day 2010

The United Nations has designated Oct. 4th as World Habitat Day in recognition for our work providing shelter to over 300,000 families across the globe. Right here in our little corner of the world we're helping the Kesselhon family make their 1888 house a safer and warmer place to call home. Check in this week as we post progress made by students and staff from UMD, St. Scholastica, and UW- Superior... It's our very own Collegiate Challenge!

Wrapping an Old Home in a Warm Blanket

In recognition of World Habitat Day 2010, Western Lake Superior Habitat for Humanity (WLSHFH) will address the lack of decent housing around the world, including the need for affordable housing in the Twin Ports.Focusing on this year’s themes, housing and health and neighborhood revitalization, WLSHFH will partner with Wagner Zaun Architects, SJA, Conservation Technologies, and Northern Energetics in a weatherization pilot program designed to significantly reduce heating bills in older homes while improving indoor air quality.

1st Annual Partner Family Picnic

With all the merging and shifting over the past several years we thought it was a great time to invite all the Habitat homeowners and A Brush With Kindness partners to join our Board and Family Support team for a cookout. On a pleasant evening in Lincoln Park everyone was well-fed on Brats donated by Old World Meats in Duluth and treats provided by Wal-Mart. Thanks to Linda Gute and Ann Miller for planning the event, all the volunteers who helped set up and serve.

New Addition to the WLSHFH Team

Coming to a neighborhood near you - our new (old) truck and tool trailer with cool logos made available at a generous discount by Dan and Cris at Northern Edge Graphics in Superior. The truck is a 1898 Chevy Scottsdale with plenty of service left in her. Thanks to Rick and the guys at Hermantown Auto for the great price and service!  View more photos.

Western Lake Superior HFH helps Habitat for Humanity achieve No. 8 on the ‘Builder 100’ list

Western Lake Superior HFH helped Habitat for Humanity achieve the rank of No. 8 on the Builder 100 list, marking the first time the nonprofit has been among the top 10 biggest builders in the United States. The list also shows Habitat, with 5,294 closings last year, moved up three spots in 2009 from its 2008 ranking of No. 11.

Taking a Break to Build

On Thursday morning we biked just 4 miles to the site of the bike home in Hibbing. We started with a concrete slab and by 4:30 had four walls and a roof framed and ready for sheathing. The new homeowners were the hardest working folks on site that day, outhustling all the type-A's that sign up for a 500 mile bike ride. Here's hoping Western Lake Superior can host a bike home in the future!  View more photos.
